UPIKE’s Champion of Character: Kayla Day

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville athletics department is always looking for ways to exemplify the NAIA Champions of Character model and this summer it is getting to do that in a big way as women’s basketball student-athlete Kayla Day was selected to the Red Cross/NAIA Collegiate Leadership Program.

Each year about 13-14 student-athletes from NAIA institutions are selected to participate in the program. The joint effort between the American Red Cross, NAIA and State Farm Insurance provides a $2,000 scholarship, two-week internship at Red Cross Headquarters in Washington, D.C. and the opportunity to sit on the board of local Red Cross blood regions across the country.

In return, Day will serve as UPIKE’s Champions of Character Ambassador and organize American Red Cross Blood Drives and activities on campus.

“Student athletes are seen as leaders on campus and this program strives to further develop their leadership skills by focusing on a lifesaving mission,” said Brian Hamil, Red Cross National Chair of Biomedical Services. “By having these student athletes rally around the importance of donating blood through the Red Cross, they help spread enthusiasm and encourage other students to get behind the cause.”
