RICHMOND, Ky. – In its final exhibition before the start of the regular season, the Eastern Kentucky University women’s basketball team defeated visiting Kentucky Christian, 97-41, Monday night in McBrayer Arena.
The Colonels used a seven-minute, 26-0 run midway through the first half to pull permanently away from Kentucky Christian. A tip-in by junior guard Shameekia Murray at the 13:07 mark ignited the run that ended with a jumper at 6:06 by junior guard Jasmine Stafford.
The two teams tied five times and had two lead changes for the first seven minutes of the game, but the Colonels’ transition offense was too much for the Lady Knights, outscoring them 14-0 in the first half.
Murray and sophomore Amadi Brooks led the Colonels with 13 points each. The Colonels had six players in double figures and four players with seven or more rebounds.
Stafford totaled 11 points and nine rebounds, four of those offensive. Stafford also added four assists to her stat line.
The Colonels made 41-of-77 shots from the field (53 percent), all while limiting Kentucky Christian to just 30 percent shooting.
EKU scored 97 points without making a three-pointer during the game. The Colonels outscored the Lady Knights, 76-12, in the paint and had 23 second-chance points.
The Colonels will go on the road now and play three away games. The toughest test of the season will come 7 p.m. Saturday when the Colonels play West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. The Mountaineers won the Big 12 conference and finished No. 7 in the final AP poll last season.
