EKU Beats Union College On Stellar Performance From Nick Mayo

Eastern Kentucky University dominated from the tip and rolls to a 97 – 66 win over Union College in their only exhibition to start the season.

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team opened the game on a 30-10 run and cruised past Union College, 97-66, in the Colonels’ lone exhibition game on Sunday afternoon in McBrayer Arena.

The Colonels used an impressive 67 percent shooting clip (20-of-30) from the field to pull away from the Bulldogs in the first half.

Freshman Nick Mayo led the way for the Colonels with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting. He also had four rebounds, one block, and two steals in just 23 minutes of action.

Senior transfer Jarelle Reischel had 14 points and five assists. Junior Javonte Hawkins came on strong late to contribute 13 points. Freshman Dujuanta Weaver came off the bench to finish with 10 points in his first collegiate action.

The Colonels dished out 20 assists on 31 made field goals while committing just 14 turnovers.

The Eastern defense shined, holding Union to 36 percent shooting from the field, including just 24 percent in the first half. The Colonels also forced the Bulldogs into 25 turnovers, scoring 32 points off them. EKU came away with 15 steals in the game.

Gerrard Newby paced Union College with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Union cut the EKU lead to 10-7 with 15:56 to go in the first half, but a Greg King layup sparked an 18-3 Colonel run over the next 3:44 to give the Colonels a 20-point lead

EKU scored seven of the first nine points of the second half to take its largest lead of the game at 33 points, 63-30. Junior Isaac McGlone’s three-pointer capped the quick start to the second half.

To finish off the impressive win, sophomore Paul Jackson found both Hawkins and King in the final seconds on back-to-back highlight alley-oops.

EKU never trailed in the game. The Colonels out-scored the Bulldogs 44-28 in the paint.

Eastern Kentucky will open the regular season on Friday in McBrayer Arena against Coppin State at 7:00 p.m.
