EASTERN KENTUCKY MEN’S GOLF PLACES 2ND AT CINCY

HEBRON, Ky. – Behind a strong performance from freshman Jared Brown, the Eastern Kentucky University men’s golf team placed second at the rain-shortened Bearcat Invitational. Playing in his fourth collegiate event, Brown tied for second among 80 golfers.

The event was scheduled for 54 holes, but was shortened to 36 after heaving rain the last two days.

Cincinnati (572) finished 4-under to capture the team title by nine shots over EKU. The Colonels shot rounds of 292 and 289 for a total of 581, five shots over par.

Brown, shot a 3-under round of 69 during Monday’s first round and then concluded play Tuesday with an even-par 72. His total of 141 (-3) tied Ashton Van Horne of Belmont and was one shot behind Baxter Reeves of Cincinnati.

Eastern beat four other Ohio Valley Conference teams, including third place Belmont (587). Morehead State (592) placed fourth. Wright State (596) and Southern Illinois Edwardsville (596) tied for fifth. The 14-team event was contested at the par-72, 7,150-yard Traditions Golf Club.

Senior Taylor Riggs (146) tied for 10th after consecutive rounds of 73. Freshman Noah Combs (148) tied for 19th at 4-over. Travis Rose (150) shaved 10 strokes off his first round score to card a 2-under 70 on Tuesday. He finished tied for 27th.

The Colonels return to play next Monday at the Kenny Perry/WKU Invitational in Bowling Green.
