EKU Soccer Falls To Southeast Missouri In OT

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Christina Rohde headed in the game-winner off a corner kick two minutes into the first overtime period to lift visiting Southeast Missouri past the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team, 1-0, on Thursday afternoon at Pat Deacon Stadium.

Neither team could find the back of the net through the first 90 minutes of regulation, although the Colonels had several opportunities. EKU outshot SEMO, 10-9, and attempted six more corner kicks than the Redhawks (9-3). It was the third consecutive loss for the Colonels in which they outshot their opponents.

Sophomore Jordan Foster created EKU’s most dangerous opportunities throughout the game, leading the Colonels with three shots and two shots on goal.

Kaitlin Kuznacic, Angie Mann and Jennifer Antonacci paced the SEMO attack with two shots apiece.

However, it was Rohde who played the role of the hero. The defender came forward and headed in a corner kick off the foot of Paige Blankenheim just two minutes into overtime to send the Redhawks (7-5-2, 2-2-1 OVC) to victory.

Senior Amani Thomas moved from forward to defender in the game and played all 92 minutes on the backline. Freshman Kacy Eckley also went the distance at defender.

Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Hall made one save in the loss.

EKU returns to action on Sunday when the Colonels host UT Martin at 1:00. A decision on any changes to the date, time or venue of that game has yet to be made.

The game was played at Transylvania University because EKU President Michael Benson announced yesterday the closing of all EKU campuses for Thursday, Oct. 8 and Friday, Oct. 9 due to a security threat on campus. This decision was made to allow law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation of the continuing threat and ensure the safety of the campus community.
