MOREHEAD, Ky. — While its been evident to Morehead State fans the vast improvements to the football program in 2015, those on the national scene can’t help but take notice now as well. Individually, and as a unit, MSU ranks among the top 20 in the NCAA football championship subdivision in more than 10 stat categories.
The 3-3 Eagles have a bye week before returning to Pioneer Football League action next Saturday at 4 p.m. ET at Campbell.
MSU’s defensive unit ranks third in the nation in takeaways (10 interceptions, 6 fumbles), tied for third in tackles for loss (48), fifth in turnover margin (+9), tied for sixth in blocked kicks (3) and 19th in red-zone defense (69 percent). Individually, senior cornerback Justin Grier ranks as the best in the nation in interceptions (5). junior defensive lineman Dustin Casey and sophomore receiver/special teams player Christian Robinson are tied for third nationally in fumbled recovered (3).
On the other side of the ball, senior slot receiver Justin Cornwall comes in third in touchdowns (8) and 15th in receiving yards (482). Junior quarterback Austin Gahafer ranks tied for third in touchdowns (17) and points responsible for (120) while also being fourth in passing yards (1,762). In addition, the Eagles lead the PFL in first downs (21.8) and passing efficiency (135.5). MSU paces the league in average attendance (8,719), which is more than 4,000 than the second-place league squad in attendance.
