Morehead State Football: Record-Setting Quarterback Elevated to Assistant Coach

Zach Lewis

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Zach Lewis, who holds numerous offensive records at Morehead State, has been elevated to assistant football coach. Lewis will coach the slot receivers.

Lewis served as a student assistant in 2013 after concluding his four-year MSU career in 2012.

“I am thrilled to expand my role on the coaching staff,” Lewis said. “I think this staff and program are headed in the right direction. Having played here with (Head) Coach (Rob) Tenyer, I have great familiarity with our offense and slot receivers. The slots are a crucial part of our offensive plan, and I hope to use my experience to help us excel.”

During his senior season, Lewis established school career records for completions (936), passing attempts (1,499), passing yards (10,251), passing touchdowns (72), offensive plays (1,710) and total yards (10,164). Following the year, he participated in the Football Championship Subdivision Senior Scout Bowl.

“Zach was an exceptional player for us, and he understands our offensive scheme,” Tenyer said. “He has been a part of our program in some capacity since his eligibility expired, which has allowed him to be involved in our day-to-day operations. He has also gained knowledge of the recruiting process. Zach understands the game, and I believe he is wired to be a college football coach.”

As a junior in 2011, he set Morehead State single-season records for completions (324), attempts (513) and passing yards (3,585), and became the first MSU quarterback to throw for more than 3,000 yards.

Lewis owns the Pioneer Football League career record for passing attempts and holds the season record for passing yards per game (325.9 in 2011). He ranks second in career passing yards and is just of three quarterbacks in the history of the league to throw for more than 10,000 yards.

A Manchester native, Lewis set Kentucky High School Athletic Association records with 13,642 passing yards and 1,508 passing attempts at Clay County High School. At the time of his graduation, he ranked second in KHSAA history with 912 completions. He also threw 105 touchdowns passes.
