BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky University’s Corey Walden was chosen as the Ohio Valley Conference Co-Player of the Week and teammate Denzel Richardson was picked as the OVC Newcomer of the Week, the league announced today from its Brentwood, Tennessee headquarters.

Walden, a senior guard, had 20 points, eight steals and five assists in EKU’s season-opening victory over Savannah State.

Playing his first game as Eastern’s primary point guard, the Daytona Beach native had only three turnovers in 38 minutes of play. Walden’s defense fueled a 17-3 run that put the game away. His steal and old-fashioned three-point play, and a second steal that led to another EKU basket accounted for the first five points of the run.

It is the first time in his career that Walden has been chosen as the OVC Player of the Week. He was picked as the OVC Newcomer of the Week four times during the 2012-13 season.

Richardson, a junior transfer from Pensacola State College, posted a double-double in his first official game as a Colonel, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Baltimore native shot 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range.

Eastern Kentucky plays host to Kentucky Christian University on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
