Morehead State Football trio earns Player of the Week accolades

MOREHEAD, Ky. — A trio of Morehead State football players have been named Pioneer Football League Players of the Week after their efforts in helping MSU secure a 36-29 victory at Valparaiso Saturday.

Junior slot receiver Jake Raymond is the league’s official Offensive Player of the Week (selected by the conference office), while senior cornerback Justin Grier was tabbed the PFL Defensive Player of the Week. Junior quarterback Austin Gahafer was selected the conference Offensive Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.

Raymond, a native of Pickerington, Ohio, caught the game-winning touchdown with 2:45 remaining and then hauled in the two-point conversion to account for the final margin. He also tallied a 44-yard score earlier in the game and threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Gahafer. Raymond finished with 88 yards on six catches.

Grier intercepted two passes, including one to thwart Valpo’s final drive in Eagle territory. The pair of picks gave the Saks, Ala., product nine for the year to lead the entire Football Championship Subdivision, and it tied David Hyland’s single-season MSU record. Grier also contributed seven tackles.

Gahafer, from Louisville, tossed three touchdowns and caught the other one from Raymond. He concluded the day with 335 yards on 27 completions and was not sacked. Gahafer now needs just 23 more yards in the season finale to become the second quarterback in program history to eclipse 3,000 yards in a season.
